Estella Scholes MA. MAFA.
Printmaking, Painting, Artists Books
I am a professional contemporary artist based in Crewe. My work is exhibited widely in the North West and in Wales, and can be found in public and private collections as far away as Norway, Qatar and New Zealand. I originally trained as a painter, although in recent years my work has concentrated on original printmaking and artists books. I am a member of Manchester Academy of Fine Art.
Many of my references are gathered from direct observation along the shorelines in North Wales, in particular the Llyn Peninsula. More recently, I have been working from ideas suggested by historical sites along the North Wales/English border.
I am intrigued by the ambiguity of natural and manmade forms, eroded almost to abstraction by the elements. Transitory arrangements of colour, texture and shape endlessly appear and disappear in the liminal space between the tides, or appear in remains from hidden layers in ancient landscapes. These fleeting impressions linger in the mind to be further abstracted and rearranged by memory.
Printmaking work includes both intaglio and relief techniques, with each printing plate inked individually so that no two can ever be the same. The various processes of addition, subtraction, damp paper and etching press, echo the natural processes at work on land and seashore.
My ideas are frequently translated into handmade artist’s books, which capture both a moment of original experience, and also the journey through process towards abstraction.
