Media or Specialism: Painting
Member of Manchester Academy of Fine Art. B.A. Hons Manc. (Fine Art). P.G.C.E. 1st class Hons. M.ed Bangor.
Most of the works in my portfolio are about man and nature, or man versus nature. In many earlier works man is represented by the geometrical grid – the rational. The form of the grid changes however and sometimes disappears, but there is always an organising or imposing force.
Natural forms are selected from plant growth, animals, especially insects but also from mosses, lichens and rock formations. I am fascinated by rhythm, patterns, surprise and fun, and sometimes take inspiration from litter, enjoying changing its status.
Colour is my most powerful tool in depicting rhythms and I find it great fun to work with. The original works are neither signed nor dated. Limited edition fine art prints (giclee) are available for most pieces and are signed dated and numbered. They are true to the originals at a fraction of the cost. All copyright is retained by me.
Women and their Children
Women take on a special role – that of motherhood. This work draws parallels between boats that take a cargo and women who take on a precious cargo. Boats like women can be found quietly waiting for others; occupants – family, friends and lovers to come back to them.
Leaves
This work celebrates not only the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem “Spring and Fall “ but also the fall and rise of leaves in our environment.
Written in Stone
The powerful rhythms in the formation of the earth are echoed throughout our planet. The searching and persuasive power of water mirrors this force.
