Mike Cooke
After graduating in Fine Art (Painting), and then ATD at Liverpool, I worked in Cheshire schools throughout my teaching career. I was able to continue with my own work, exhibiting in both group and solo shows, through to my retirement from teaching. Now, working full time on my art, my work is represented in private collections in the UK, Portugal and Hong Kong.
I work mainly, though not exclusively, in landscape.
I’m lucky to have access to varying locations, from Cheshire, Scotland and Wales, to Spain, Portugal and Hong Kong. Inevitably (particularly with Hong Kong) other, more pressing human agendas intervene.
I’m drawn to small intrigues such as hedges partially screening the view (now you see it, now you don’t), and lanes disappearing around a corner (where does it lead to? etc ). I suppose that I’m naturally inquisitive (some might say nosey!) and so am interested in the visual curiosities of landscape. I try to reflect on the process of distraction… that there’s always something in the corner of my vision that attracts me away from my original intentions. This often results in works which display both abstracted and figurative elements side by side, and intermingling with each other, in an attempt to duplicate the way in which we see and think, at one and the same time.
I work in a mix of acrylics and oils, most often leading to other mixed media, and then sometimes into relief and 3D .This is borne from a central interest in colour and surface. I also explore both drawing and monoprinting as end-product.
