Tracy Hill

I am a visual artist living and working in the North west of England . I currently work as a Senior Printmaking Technician and co-leader of Artlab Contemporary Print Studios at the University of Central Lancashire. My continued research into alternative acrylic based printmaking has led me to undertake research with The Bluecoat in Liverpool as well as initiating several collaborative exhibitions and research projects between other International printmaking studios.
In 2010 I completed a residency at The Centre of Contemporary Art in Preston and the resulting works were shown over a 4 week period. The Installation works from this residency were shown in the Liverpool Biennial at the Wolstenholme Creative Space, during the long night of the Museums.
During April 2011 I took part in the International residency programme at Pyramid Atlantic, Washington DC, the resulting works will be shown in Washington DC in December 2011.

  • Field of Vision. 'Namurian Rocks' respond to the unique landscapes of Northern England, The physical elements experienced travelling through landscape and the visual language of maps captures a presence of place and significance of human presence.
  • field of vision. The idea for Field of Vision was born out of a shared passion for walking. Two printmakers, two different ways of seeing but with one vision - to walk in each other’s respective homeland and respond to those landscapes through print. In September 2010 Martha Oatway and Tracy Hill began Field of Vision in Lancashire where they planned and undertook 5 walks around Preston. In April 2011 they travelled to Washington DC to complete the remaining 5 walks.
  • Basement membrane. This installation consists of 10 hanging screen prints on Kozo (Mulberry) paper with hand cut sections running through out. The panels have multiple printed layers on both sides inviting the viewer to consider the narratives of those places through time, moving around the pieces our perspectives are altered. In the same way that what you see walking through the landscape looks completely different on your return journey.
  • Footsquare. Footsquare is a series of ten panels constructed from layered screenprints and drawings.
  • Liminal Territories. Suspended membranes of pathways contained within the contours of an etched line, these pieces hang slightly from the wall to allow the light to travel through the cut outs casting shadows onto the underlying terrain surface print. The negative spaces become the positive below.

  • Lifelines. Along the way 6 hanging screen prints on kozo paper with hand cut sections on linked panels; a moving projection glides down in constant motion, light streams through cut out pathways creating new maps and journeys across the walls and surrounding floor. It is a response to those surprising spaces which have been forgotten. Space on the edge of rivers, canals and housing are often pockets of wildness, these areas are not considered on conventional plan maps and yet account for thousands of square miles across Britain.
  • Lifelines. 'Son up till son down' 3 artist books installation at The Centre for Contemporary Art Preston.
  • Footnotes. A floor installation of 30 plaster prints. New technologies expand the possibilities of how to view the world and how we map it ; this work invites questions about scale and how we place ourselves in the world in relation to our maps. 'Out of one territory, one map can bloom a thousand geographies.'
