Pearl Davies
After a career teaching and examining French, I decided to explore my creative potential. Following a Foundation Course in art, a Btec HND at NEWI and an Honours Degree in Ceramics from Wolverhampton University, I established my own full time workshop in Chester in 1993. I make one-off pieces for exhibition and sale directly to individuals. I have been selected by the Craft Potters’ Association and other prestigious groups for their exclusive shows and exhibit widely.
I find my inspiration in the colours and textures of nature, synthesising my sources into an organic but abstract form. I am concerned above all with the cycles of erosion and decay of matter matched by the birth and regrowth of new life. I find a personal satisfaction in manipulating clay and natural minerals to recreate a different and enduring form of nature, conveying the continual movement of change and the fragile balance and timelessness of the world about us. I hope that my pieces may evoke in others a deeper and personal response.
Each piece is individually hand built by me from a variety of stoneware clays using few if any tools. The glazes are the results of continuous experimentation over time. My work is high-fired in gas reduction and vitrified, suitable therefore for indoor or outdoor use. It is multi-glazed to achieve the colours and textures needed to complement the organic and twisting or eroded forms. These resolve themselves as wall pieces or as free-standing sculptures which may be placed in a variety of positions to give changing views.
